Frequently Asked Questions: Sleep and Lift Chairs

A lift chair will provide ease of sitting and reclining in the chair and also standing from the chair through an automated lift option. And if the lift chair is not also described as a sleep chair, it is not designed for extended sleep or use (although cat naps are okay!). A chair described as a sleep chair also provides a lift option, but is designed for 18 hours of use per day, including sleeping.

To Get INTO Your Chair:

  1. While standing next to your chair, press the chair up or rise button and raise the chair to a height you can sit back against. This height will vary from person to person depending on the individual’s needs.
  2. Be sure to raise the chair high enough so you do not have to flop down into the chair, as that will cause damage to the chair and could also cause personal injury.
  3. Ease back into the chair.
  4. Press the chair down or recline button.
  5. As the chair continues downward, adjust yourself into a position that is comfortable to you.
  6. Continue pressing the button until the chair is in the seated position, meaning that the chair is firmly on the floor, then release the button so that it won't continue into any sort of recline position.

To Get OUT OF Your Chair:

  1. To get out of your chair, press the chair up or rise button and raise the chair to a height that enables you to easily stand.
  2. Release the button.
  3. Exit the chair.
  4. Once you are out of the chair, return it to the seated position (chair firmly on the floor) to avoid the risk of anything or anyone (such as small children or pets) getting caught under the chair as it is being operated.

You will want to place your chair in the room where it will be most convenient for you, such as near your television, radio, reading light, an end table or other furniture you wish to be near. Leave enough space between the back of the chair and any wall or other obstruction. This allows the chair to recline (about 18 inches for standard models, 25 inches for StellarComfort models). Be sure check the specs of your chair manual to know exact measurement as recline space needed may vary based on the specific chair model.

Do not allow any objects to restrict movement of the footrest. Some carpets have a high plush pile that can rub on the bottom of the footrest, and this situation can damage the mechanism. You can adjust the footrest to correct this issue by turning the levelers (located under the front of the chair).

For our UltraComfort chairs, press one of the pre-programmed buttons (ZG, TV, SIT, REJUV) and hold the button down until the chair stops. Press buttons (A thru D) to micro adjust specific positions to suit your needs. After you have the chair in your desired programmed position, you should be set. However, if you want to reprogram the memory buttons at any time, refer to the following procedure.

1. When you are in the desired position, press and hold the memory button (M). The back light goes off while pressed.

2. In about 3 seconds the backlight will start flashing (one flash).

3. Within 5 seconds, press one of the memory buttons to save the position to the button pressed. The backlight will return to a non-flashing position indicating that the new position is stored. If a programmable memory button is not pressed within 5 seconds, or a non programmable button is pressed, then the programming sequence is aborted and you will need to repeat steps 1 to 3 above. You may reprogram the memory buttons as often as you like.

With a two-position lift chair, when the chair is reclining and the footrest is going up, the angle between the backrest and the seat does not change. With a three-position lift chair, when the chair is reclining and the footrest is going up, the backrest will also recline even further back, providing a wider angle between the seat and the backrest. This chair can also recline more fully into a “sleeper” or “napper” position.

Factory Reset is NOT how you calibrate your chair. Use the factory reset when you wish to clear your saved positions. Factory Reset will reset all the programmed buttons back to the original (factory) settings.

1. Press and hold the program button (M) until lights on hand control flash.

3. Within 5 seconds, press button (A).* The backlight will change to non-flashing.

4. Within another 5 seconds, press the button (D). Factory reset is done.

*If button (A) is not pressed within 5 seconds, or a different button is pressed, the programming sequence is aborted and you’ll need to repeat steps 1 to 4 above.

Chair Calibration sets the chair for positions specific to your needs. Depending on use over time, the position buttons may stop bringing your chair to the full position initially calibrated, and you’ll need to perform a position accuracy calibration. Your chair will also need to be recalibrated if there is a power disruption. To calibrate or recalibrate your chair, follow the video specific to your chair here:
