Mattress Size, Does it Matter?

So, you are ready for a new mattress. You start your research and find yourself overwhelmed with options. First and foremost, what's with all of these mattress sizes? Do you have to live in California to appreciate the California King size? And when should a child move from a twin to a full mattress? Don't get us started on a queen versus king size - and then there are the split-head mattress options. So many choices, where do you begin?

Below is a guide to mattress sizes and what might be the best options for your space as well as the person or people sleeping on the bed.

We'll start small and move up....

Twin (Dimensions: 38"x75")
The twin-size mattress is a great space saver, particularly for children, and even better if they are sharing a room. These mattresses can be placed on the same level, or put them on a trundle or bunk bed option to really save space. Twin beds can also be used for some campers as well as for daybeds when you have a spare bedroom for that last-minute houseguest. Not only are twin mattresses great for saving space, they also are good when you are on a budget.

Twin XL (Dimensions: 38"x80")
Think college dorm rooms for this bed size. No, we aren't implying that it can only be used for this space. It's just the "go to" on college campuses for students, who are varying heights. This mattress is the same length as a queen or king mattress, but the width of a twin. An important fact is that the twin XL mattress is half the size of a king mattress. So, if you are sharing a bed, but you have different needs from your partner, you can get your own twin XL mattress that fits your comfort level, and still share a king-sized space with your partner. Add a different adjustable base underneath, and you'll be able to adapt your sleeping situation to your own needs. Your body and relationship will thank you!

Full (Dimensions: 53"x75")
Like the twin, this bed is shorter in length, but it is wider, which allows you to put it into smaller spaces, while allowing more room while you sleep. It's not a great everyday option for two people sleeping in the same bed, but is perfect for someone sleeping solo who also needs a bit more room when they sleep than the twin size allows. The full bed is a fabulous option for that spare guest bedroom.

Queen (Dimensions: 60"x80")
The queen size mattress is still the most popular one for couples. It fits most bedroom spaces and allows couples to have more room to sleep than a full bed. Many adults who do not share a bed also prefer the queen size mattress. Be aware that if you use an adjustable base, you will need to agree with your partner on how high you want your head and knees raised. If you don't agree, you might want to consider the split king option (two twin XL mattresses - see above).

King (Dimensions: 76"x80")
Luxurious is often what we use to describe this mattress size. A king bed allows couples to have their own space, while also providing the opportunity for snuggling on those cold nights. Remember that if you have different mattress comfort preferences than your partner, you can get two twin XL mattresses and they will equal the dimensions of a king mattress. Be sure to check your room dimensions if considering a king size mattress to make sure it will fit.

California King (Dimensions: 72"x84")
Yes, this size gets it name from its popularity on the west coast. A little narrower than a king size mattress, the California king allows particularly tall individuals to have that extra length in the bed so they avoid hanging their feet off of the end. Again, be sure to measure your space to ensure this mattress will fit. This mattress also often comes in a split mattress version.

Split Head King Mattresses
In the mattress industry we like to provide options. The split head mattress is one of these added options. Halfway up your mattress, the bed is divided. Note that this mattress is specifically designed to be used with an adjustable base. With the split head mattress, you can adjust the head of your specific mattress side to your own needs. An example of when this comes in handy is when one partner snores. Being able to adjust that side of the head of the mattress to stop the snoring means happier sleep for both of you.
